Dental Extraction Coming Up? Here’s What to Expect

Bay Premier Dentistry specializes in dental extractions done by highly trained professionals in Tampa, FL. If you’ll be getting a tooth extracted in the future, here is what you can expect.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

Getting a tooth extracted is often quick and easy. During a simple extraction, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the mouth and eliminate discomfort. Depending on the patient’s specific dental situation, additional anesthesia may be used to increase safety and comfort.

Once the area is numb, the tooth will be loosened with a tool called an elevator and then pulled from the gum tissue using forceps. In some cases, patients will be instructed to bite down on gauze to stop bleeding in the socket. Stitches may also be applied to close the gums.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

Getting a single tooth extracted can take up to 40 minutes. Getting multiple teeth removed, or getting a surgical extraction, can lengthen the amount of time it takes to complete the procedure successfully. Each additional tooth adds up to 15 minutes to your appointment time, depending on where the tooth is located.

Will the Extraction Be Painful?

Getting a tooth extraction isn’t painful – you’ll be quite comfortable during the procedure. Your dentist will use an anesthetic to numb the nerves in the gum tissue and mouth that cause pain. The only thing you’ll feel is a slight pressure during the procedure. This pressure won’t cause any discomfort, but if you experience any pain, let your dentist know immediately.

Emergency Extractions

In the event of an emergency, it is highly recommended that you visit your dentist. Often, patients head to the emergency room and are given pain medications and referred to their dentist. Hospitals may not be able to fix your dental problem, but a dental expert can provide a diagnosis and treatment.
